Windows
Vista SP1 will change the version number from 6.0.6000 to
6.0.6001.
Windows
Vista & Server 2008 SP2 will change the version number to
6.0.6002.
NOTE:
Security updates listed here will be grouped by each year they
were released. Starting on
November 2016, new security updates for Windows Vista &
Server 2008 will be released only
on the Windows Update & Microsoft Update Catalog
sites. And starting April 2017, Microsoft
has stopped publishing new Security Bulletins and only the MS
Security Update Guide site
features new security updates released in April 2017 &
later. Starting September
2018,
Microsoft switched to a new cumulative update format for
Windows Server 2008, similar to the
cumulative updates released for Windows 7, 8 & 8.1, which
started October 2016.
NOTE: It is not necessary to
download & install all of the updates listed on my
page. You are not required
to
install them unless your system has suffered serious
problems. Make sure you download the
patches
for the correct operating system. You can uninstall
most system updates from your system
if
they cause more problems than they fix.
I've made this page simply for
informational purposes and to make downloading updates
faster & easier. All the updates for
Windows
Vista & Server 2008 listed here can be installed only
under the x64 edition and not the ia64 edition.
Before installing any WinVista
& WS2008 updates, be sure to activate and validate
your copy of Windows Vista or Server 2008.

~ - The
KB3170455 security update for Vista/Server 2008 was
revised in mid-September 2017 to address some problems
with
the original KB30170455 security update but the revised
update is only available from Microsoft Update Catalog
& Windows Update.
Although the revised KB3170455 security update is listed
for Windows Server 2008 SP2, it can also be installed
under Vista SP2.
Windows
Vista & Server 2008 Service Packs: (for x64
edition only, not for ia64 edition)
|
Notes: Only install the Windows
Vista/Server 2008 Service Pack if a newer hotfix or a
security update requires it. See MS KB
article
947366
if you experience problems installing either Vista SP1 or
SP2. Vista SP1 & SP2 are both available at Windows
Update.
Installing
Vista SP1 will change the version number from 6.0.6000.16386
to 6.0.6001.18000. However, installing SP2
under
Vista
or Server 2008 will change the version number to
6.0.6002.18005. SP2 requires WinVista SP1 & the
KB955430
update
installed
and cannot be installed under the original release of
WinVista. Note that Win2008 already comes with the
Vista
SP1
files.
<>
Caution:
See MS KB article 948465
on any issues with Windows Vista & Server 2008 SP2.
|
Notes: Since Windows Vista no longer
includes the old Windows Help Viewer to view help files with
the .HLP file extension,

to view .HLP help files in Vista. The KB971512 update
includes
DirectX
11 library files from Win7. The KB971512 &
KB2117917 updates are needed to install IE9 under Vista
&
Server
2008.
~
- These updates can be installed on both Windows
Vista SP2 & Server 2008 SP2.
^
- These updates must be removed before attempting to
upgrade from Vista/Server 2008 SP2 to Windows 7 or higher
OSes.
+
- The Media Center TV Pack 2008 addon should only be
installed & used on the Home Premium and Ultimate
editions of
Windows Vista only; while the pack

Basic, Business & Enterprise,
the Media Center application from
the 2008 pack will fail to run on other editions beside Home
Premium & Ultimate (AND

control panel.
! - Windows Management Framework 3.0 for Windows Server 2008
SP2 requires .NET Framework 4.0 or higher installed AND
the
KB968930 & KB960568 updates installed first.
<> - The KB4517134 & newer
servicing stack updates will fail to install if the older
KB4493730 servicing stack update is not
installed first.

Notes: Any
downloads for Windows Vista & Server 2008 are found from
its Windows Update feature. By default, Vista/WS2008 may
be setup to download and install system updates automatically
while connected to the Internet. To turn the feature off
[if you're annoyed by it] open the Control Panel, select the
Windows Update control panel applet, click on the Change
Settings link and select the option that says "Never Check for
Updates (not recommended)", then click Ok to save your
settings. Disabling the Automatic Updates feature by
using that method will cause the Security Center feature to
display some annoying pop-up messages that Automatic Updates
was turned off, so open up Security Center, click on "Change
the way Security Center alerts me" link to bring up the Alert
Settings dialog box, uncheck the checbox next to Automatic
Updates. Then click OK to save changes and close the
Security Center window and Security Center will no longer
display popup messages that Automatic Updates was disabled.
