ERPMan's Windows 98 & Windows ME System Updates Page
  (Updated Friday May 9, 2008)

Maximize the web browser window when viewing this page [using at least 800 by 600 screen resolution].

(Critical Updates are bug fixes that fix serious problems such as specific security hacker attacks)
(Recommended Updates are optional - not really necessary to download & install but include system improvements)
NOTE: It is not necessary to download & install all of the updates listed on my page.  You are not required
to install them unless your system has suffered serious problems.  Make sure you download the
patches for the correct operating system.  You can uninstall most system updates from your system
if they cause more problems than they fix.

I've made this page simply for informational purposes and to make downloading updates faster & easier.

Key- Windows 98 FE = First Edition [aka. Gold] version 4.10.1998, SE = Second Edition version 4.10.2222,
ME = Millennium Edition version 4.90.3000 [Windows ME is sometimes known as Windows 98 Third Edition]
[a little star * indicates a new system update; the <> symbol means to install a patch with caution because it may have a
possible side effect; I am not responsible if the updates you download here do more harm than good]
All support for Windows 98 & Windows Millennium Edition [ME] has ended on July 11, 2006.  No more new security updates
or will be made for Win98 & ME.  Please read this Microsoft Support page on the End-of-Support page on Windows 98 & ME.

the unofficial Win98 SE SP 3.0 download with link to beta 2 of the 98se SP 3.0 download.

Critical Non-security Hotfixes/Updates & Security Patches: - read the Notes section

Notes:  If you are paranoid about security, install ALL of the updates above for the correct Windows operating system but start
off with the Telnet Update if using Win98.  WinME users should start off by installing either the WebTV MS00-074 update or the
MS00-073 Q273727 security update.  Then work your way up the list to the most current security updates for either Windows 98
or Windows ME.  Download & install the security updates in ascending order [from bottom to top].  The Malformed IPX NMPI
Packet Security Updates also include the Share Level Password security fixes.  The 'Help & Support Update' of Nov. 2000
for WinME is no longer available from the Windows Update site after the WinME 812709 Help & Support Security Update was
posted. For those using Windows ME download & install the Windows ME System Restore Update immediately in order to
use System Restore checkpoints created from September 8, 2001 and beyond (this is now a critical update).  The WinME
Web Client Q282132 Security update should be installed if Office 2000 or XP is not installed.  If Office 2000 or XP is installed
under WinME, do NOT use the WinME Q282132 update.  Install Office 2000 SP3 or greater under WinME if using Office 2k.
For those using Windows 98 First Edition version (4.10.1998) install the Win98 Service Pack 1 System Update featured
in the Recommended Updates section of this page and the two Y2K updates before installing any security fixes above.
For those using Windows 98 Second Edition version (4.10.2222 A) install all of the Win98 security updates available above.  The
UPnP Security Update of Dec. 2001 for Win98 can only be installed if the Internet Connection Sharing [ICS] client from WinXP is
installed on a Win98 computer.  To install the XP-based ICS Client on a Win98 machine, copy the netsetup.exe file from the
'Windows\System32' folder of a computer with WinXP onto a floppy disk.  Then put the floppy disk that has the netsetup.exe
file into a Win98 machine and run netsetup.exe to install the ICS Client, which also installs the UPnP feature, and then restart the
Win98 machine.  Now you will be able to use the Win98 Q314941 UPnP update.  If you use the netsetup.exe file from at least
WinXP SP1, the Q314941 patch is not needed because the SP1 & higher versions of the XP-based ICS Client include the
security fix; only the original release of the addon is affected.  I no longer offer the KB828028 security hotfixes for Win98 & ME
as the unofficial KB835732 patches for Win98/ME include a newer version of the msasn1.dll file.
<> Caution: The Windows 98 & ME KB908519 updates install the updated T2embed.dll file correctly but they install incorrect
QFECheck registry information about the updated T2embed.dll file.  Install the Win98 or ME KB908519 Info Registry Fix so
that QFECheck can correctly detect the updated T2embed.dll file.  There are several issues that can occur when installing the
unofficial HTML Help MS07-008 update.  See MS article 896358 for details.

Other updates & Add-ons for Windows 98 & ME:

Notes:  Many of the updates listed here are for certain or specific hardware configurations or on certain brand name computers
and are NOT needed in all systems & may cause some problems on some other machines.  The Directory Services Client addon
for Windows 98 has been revised as an MS hotfix mentioned in MS article 323455; DSClient for Win98 can be used under
WinME as long as its system file protection feature is turned on.  For any issues using the Active Directory Client Extensions
for Windows 9x/ME systems under WinME see MS support KB article 276472.  Do NOT use the NT4 version of DSClient under
Win9x/ME.  MS Paint version 5.00.1523.1 for Win95 can be used under Win98 & ME and you can overwrite the MS Paint program
included in Win98 or ME.  Only version 5.00.1523.1 of Paint has the ability to load & save custom colors to a *.pal file.  The
Win98 & ME versions of Paint do NOT have those abilities to load/save colors as they've been removed from those versions.
You can only use the Save Colors option if the color depth is in 16-bit High Color mode or better.  For those using Win98 SE,
I highly recommend downloading & installing the Unofficial Win98 SE Service Pack which includes many of the non-critical &
security fixes.  After installing the MS Paint program, download the MS Paint Graphics Filters Pack from Axcel216's web site
and follow the instructions on how to install the updated graphics filters.  The DirectX6 Media addon for Windows 98 FE
is already included in Win98 SE & WinME.  For more Win98 and WinME patches not listed here, see MDGx's/Axcel216's
Windows Software Essentials page.  The NT4 Option Pack includes Personal Web Server 4.0 and can be installed (but not
supported) under WinME.  The NT4 Option Pack can be used under Win98 & ME.  The Win98 CDs have a slightly newer
version of Personal Web Server that is stored in the \Add-Ons\Pws\ folder.  Win98 users can install the updated version of
Personal Web Server 4.0 from the \Addons\Pws\ folder of the Win98 CD.
~ Sidenote: The DirectX 9.0c December 2006 Redist. download is the very last download to have the latest DirectX components
for Windows 98 & ME.  DirectX Redistributable downloads created from 2007 and beyond will only include DirectX components
for Windows 2000, XP, Server 2003 & Vista OSes.

Other sites to find system updates and/or info for Windows 98 & ME:

Notes: By default, Windows ME may be setup to download system updates automatically while connected to the Internet.  To turn
the Automatic Updates feature off [if you're annoyed by it] open the Control Panel, click on the Automatic Updates applet and
select the option to update your computer manually.  If you downloaded & install the updated AutoUpdate tool for WinME from
the Windows Update site, you will have to disable the AutoUpdates feature again as it defaults back to downloading ME updates
automatically on the Autoupdate control panel applet.

Information on how to obtain and install system updates under Windows 98 & ME:

Note:  Be aware that there is a Win2k/XP version of Qfecheck.exe that is run from the Command Prompt in Win2k/XP.  Do
NOT use the Win2k/XP version of Qfecheck under Win9x/ME and do NOT use the Win9x/ME version of Qfecheck
under Win2000/XP.  See MS Support KB Article 282784 for details about the Win2k/XP version of Qfecheck.exe.
Do NOT use the Win2k version of Qfecheck under WinXP and vice versa.  The Win9x/ME version of Qfecheck DOES
run under Win2000 & XP but will NOT find any Win2k/XP hotfixes installed.
